Objectives

1. Describe the significance of vulnerable plaque in the treatment of acute coronary syndromes.
2. Explain the important factors for differentiating etiologies of chest pain including acute coronary syndrome, pericarditis, aortic dissection, and pulmonary embolism.
3. List the revascularization strategies in the management of patients presenting with acute coronary syndrome.
4. Identify subtle patterns of injury and ischemia on a 12-lead ECG. 5. Distinguish between normal ECG variants and mimics of injury and ischemia on the 12-lead ECG.
6. Outline nursing assessment and treatment for emergencies involving pulmonary embolism and acute cor pulmonale.
7. Discuss nursing priorities for the care of an acute MI patient including the management of hemodynamic and mechanical complications.
8. Describe hemodynamic assessment, and pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options for the management of a patient in cardiogenic shock.
9. Differentiate and describe emergency treatment for wide complex and narrow complex tachycardias, including those associated with Wolfe Parkinson White syndrome.
10. State the nursing assessment and treatments for emergencies involving cardiac tamponade.

About the Speaker

Karen M. Marzlin received her Acute Care Clinical Nurse Specialist certification from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh. She has been a nurse for over 22 years, providing cardiovascular patient care through a variety of roles including staff nurse, educator, manager, and administrator. Currently working in inpatient cardiac care and chest pain observation units, Karen provides care for patients with cardiac conditions including coronary syndrome, heart failure and arrhythmia disturbances. Her background also includes heart failure telemanagement, cardiac stress testing, risk factor modification, catheterization, diagnostics and rehabilitation.

In addition to her clinical practice, Karen is co-owner of two nursing education and consulting businesses and a published author on cardiovascular topics. Her published works include Cardiovascular Nursing Practice: A Comprehensive Resource Manual and Study Guide for Clinical Nurses (2007) and Cardiovascular Nursing: A Comprehensive Overview (2006). Karen was a featured speaker for the American Association of Critical Care Nurses National Teaching Institute Pre-conference Sessions in 2005 through 2009 and has taught the Cardiac Medical Certification Review Course.
