Course Description, Learner Objectives and Featured Speaker for each conference session and optional pre-conference session:
Hypertension, Lipid Disorders & Atherosclerosis: New & Emerging Drug Treatments
Thursday, October 14, 2010 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Featured Speaker: Reamer Bushardt, PharmD, PA-C
Reamer Bushardt will share with you new and emerging cardiac medications, the latest information regarding drug therapies for hypertension and lipid disorders, and current national guidelines. His approach to medication management is based on the premise that patients should be actively involved in their own medical decisions regarding the risks, benefits and expected outcomes associated with their treatment options. By adopting this approach, every member of the health care team can better understand the medications they prescribe or administer and maximize the safety and effectiveness of drug therapies for patients.
Objectives -
Following this conference session, you will be able to:
- Detail the latest guidelines for the management of pre-hypertension and chronic hypertension.
- Describe the latest treatment recommendations for common and mixed dyslipidemias to prevent cardiovascular complications.
- Identify the latest and novel pharmacologic developments for common cardiovascular conditions, including acute coronary syndrome, arrhythmia, and hypertension.
Acute Coronary Syndrome: Differentiating STEMI from STEMI Imposters
Thursday, October 14, 2010 from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Featured Speaker: Cathy Lockett, MHA, BSN, RN, CCRN, EMT
Attend this session and gain the latest information for obtaining 12-lead, 15-lead and right-sided ECGs. Learn a systematic approach to interpreting ECGs that will help you differentiate between ischemia, injury and infarction, and to recognize complications associated with Acute Coronary Syndrome. You will also learn to differentiate STEMIs from STEMI imposters, a skill that is essential to the selection of appropriate treatment.
Objectives -
Following this conference session, you will be able to:
- Describe the proper lead placement for the 12-lead, 15-lead and right-sided ECG and state the criteria for obtaining additional leads.
- Determine ischemia and infarction on the ECG and describe treatment modalities.
- Identify and differentiate STEMI imposters on a 12-lead ECG.
Code Blue: "Cool" Strategies for Preserving Cerebral & Coronary Profusion
Friday, October 15, 2010 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Featured Speaker: Sydney Lange, RN, MSN, CCRN, CCNS
Despite approximately 40 years of advanced cardiac life support, less than half of cardiac arrest victims with a return of spontaneous circulation survive to hospital discharge. Brain injury is the most common cause of death after initial resuscitation. Approximately 10-30% of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest survivors have permanent brain injury as a result of global ischemia. Strategies that may have been implemented in an attempt to improve these outcomes include: biphasic defibrillation, use of vasopressin, medical emergency teams and therapeutic hypothermia post-cardiac arrest. This session will explore these evidence-based strategies and their results in detail.
Objectives -
Following this conference session, you will be able to:
- Detail the implementation of a medical emergency team and its implications for patient outcomes.
- Describe the implementation of therapeutic hypothermia in the post-cardiac arrest setting.
Optional Pre-conference Session #1
Atrial Fibrillation: Current Trends & Best Practices
Wednesday, October 13, 2010 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Featured Speaker: Reamer Bushardt, PharmD, PA-C
Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common clinically-significant cardiac arrhythmia in the world. Over 2.3 million Americans suffer from AF, which is a common cause for hospitalization for older adults. A major concern for AF patients is an increased risk of vascular complications such as stroke and myocardial infarction. Health care providers need to understand how to navigate the multifaceted management for AF patients, which may include rate and rhythm control and the use of anticoagulation medications. Newer research findings and controversies over control for AF patients experiencing concurrent heart failure will also be discussed.
Objectives -
Following this pre-conference session, you will be able to:
- Describe current practices for the management of atrial fibrillation, including controversies over rate versus rhythm control.
- Recognize best practices for the safe, effective use of antithrombotic therapy, including practical pearls for overcoming common treatment challenges in anticoagulation.
Optional Pre-conference Session #2
"How Do You Mend A Broken Heart?": Takotsubo Cardiomyopathy
Wednesday, October 13, 2010 from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Featured Speaker: Sydney Lange, RN, MSN, CCRN, CCNS
The damaging effects of stress on the cardiovascular system are well accepted by the medical community. Takotsubo cardiomyopathy is a syndrome of stress-related cardiomyopathy that has been identified with increasing frequency. Often referred to as the "broken heart syndrome," this condition mimics myocardial infarction in patients without obstructive coronary artery disease. Initial signs and symptoms resemble those of acute coronary syndrome: chest pain, dyspnea, electrocardiographic changes, and elevated levels of cardiac biomarkers are common. Better understanding and recognition of this syndrome by medical professionals will improve patient management and outcomes.
Objectives -
Following this pre-conference session, you will be able to:
- Describe the features of takotsubo cardiomyopathy.
- Differentiate this syndrome from myocardial infarction regarding treatment, complications, prognosis, and medical professional implications.
