During this interactive session, we'll discuss neuropathy in detail, especially the motor and autonomic system and the role it plays in limb loss for people with diabetes. You will learn the complex interplay between hyperglycemia, neuropathy and microcirculation. The plain language, diagrams and devices used will be valuable assets in your work with patients with diabetes.

Objectives - Following this conference session, you will be able to:
  1. Explain 3 ways motor neuropathy increases risk of a diabetic foot ulcer.
  2. List 3 treatments for acute Charcot foot syndrome that may prevent permanent foot deformity.
  3. Demonstrate the use of a Semmes-Weinstein 5.07mm monofilament to detect sensory neuropathy.

4) Using Motivational Interviewing and Patient Empowerment Counseling
Wednesday, October 6, 2010 from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Featured Speaker: Mary Ann Hodorowicz, RD, LDN, MBA, CDE, CEC

Diabetes control is related to modifiable health behaviors. Patient empowerment and motivational interviewing are new alternatives to the outdated and ineffective 'compliance' approach to patient care. This interactive group session will provide you with new, practical tools and guide you through a comprehensive overview of the goals, principles, strategies and spirit of PE and MI.

Objectives - Following this conference session, you will be able to:
  1. Differentiate between empowerment and compliance counseling.
  2. List the empowerment steps to use during a patient visit to change behavior (A.D.O.P.T.E.E.).
  3. Explain the principles of motivational interviewing (G.R.A.C.E.) and its primary tools (O.A.R.S.).

5) Preventing Vascular Diseases Associated with Diabetes
Thursday, October 7, 2010 from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
Featured Speaker: Kate Glasenapp, MSN, ANP-BC, BC-ADM, CDE

Preventing vascular disease in the midst of diabetes is a challenging, but essential, goal. Using a case-based approach, we will focus on the prevention of disease development and disease progression reviewing evidence-based guidelines. Through our discussion, we will achieve a re-energized outlook regarding our need to work toward limiting vascular disease.

Objectives - Following this conference session, you will be able to:
  1. Assess specific vascular risks associated with diabetes.
  2. Explain strategies to implement in diabetes management to limit the development and/or progression of vascular disease.
  3. Determine interventions to effectively reduce the incidence of vascular events in patients with diabetes.

6) Treating a Diabetic Foot Ulcer: Teamwork Not Optional!
Thursday, October 7, 2010 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Featured Speaker: Joan Junkin, MSN, APRN-CNS, CWOCN

The most complex wound is a neuropathic foot ulcer. We need to off-load the wounded area so patients can stay mobile without harming the ulcer. We also have to debride, dress and monitor the progress of the wounds. During this seminar, we will discuss the numerous ways to accomplish each of these. It may take a village to raise a child, but it takes a team to heal a neuropathic foot ulcer!

Objectives - Following this conference session, you will be able to:
  1. List 3 options for improving endorphin levels to maximize microcirculation.
  2. Define pros and cons for off-loading options.
  3. Analyze optimal debridement methods for various situations.

7) New Algorithm for Type 2 Medications
Thursday, October 7, 2010 from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Featured Speaker: Charlene Freeman, RN, CDE, CPT

The costly, devastating complications of diabetes can be prevented with good glycemic control, utilizing oral medications and insulin. During this session, we will examine the latest algorithm for initiating oral medications for the Type 2 patient. In addition, we will discuss how and when to initiate insulin therapy.

Objectives - Following this conference session, you will be able to:
  1. Explain the new algorithm from the American Diabetes Association for the use of medications for the Type 2 diabetes patient.
  2. Discuss the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists algorithm on how to use medication according to the A1c result.
  3. Illustrate improved glycemic control by initiating insulin treatment for Type 2 patients.
