Session #2 - Medications in Pregnancy

Which medications are safe during pregnancy? Which are most effective for sleep disturbance, weight gain, libido, post-partum depression . . . and so many more common pregnancy ailments? Session #3 - Complications and Legal Implications

Session Description:
This session offers insight into the multitude of antenatal testing options – who to test and important implications to consider. Shoulder dystocia will be fully explored as it still continues to be one of the "worst" emergencies. We will look at current evidence, methods to facilitate an optimal delivery and the key documentation details to include. We will end the session focusing on what is legally impacting obstetrical practice, including areas of risk: forceps use, vacuums, cerebral palsy, and Pitocin. You can plan to gain insightful tips and some cautionary strategies to apply in your own work setting.

Session #4 – Bleeding Extremes in Pregnancy

MICHELLE QUALE, RN, MSN, CNM, FNP-BC Michelle Quale, RN, MSN, CNM, FNP-BC, practices as a Certified Nurse Midwife and Family Nurse Practitioner in Minnesota. She has practiced in the area of obstetrical nursing for 20 years, including experiences as a labor/delivery nurse, nursery nurse, nurse coordinator, childbirth educator and fetal monitor instructor. Michelle has served as a clinical faculty member for both Minnesota State University and the University of Minnesota. Additionally, she has participated as a member of ICSI and the Rural Health Initiative for Obstetrics for the Minnesota Board of Health. In her daily role, she treats patients experiencing the variety of obstetrical conditions addressed during this important day of learning. JAMIE OTREMBA, MSN, RN, CNM

JAMIE OTREMBA, MSN, RN, CNM Jamie Otremba, MSN, RN, CNM, has over 25 years of maternal child nursing experience and is currently practicing full scope nurse-midwifery at a progressive OB/GYN clinic in suburban Minnesota. Jamie has been active in program development and benchmarking in both clinic and hospital settings. She is also one of the medical directors for the Women’s and Children’s Service Line at a large hospital and medical center in Minnesota. Jamie served as an assistant professor at Minnesota State University and has practiced in women’s health care in a variety of settings, including labor and delivery, postpartum, antenatal, and community health nursing.

She has consulted area health care facilities on clinical and legal practice topics, and she continues as an investigator for several medication trials pertinent to obstetric and gynecologic issues. Additionally, Jamie has enjoyed sharing her vast knowledge and experiences as a preceptor for both medical and advanced practice nursing students. Her goal is to provide you with the latest pharmacological options for pregnancy and birth to ultimately improve the maternal and fetal outcomes of your own patients.

CHERYL SCOTT, PHD, RN, IBCLC, RLC

Cheryl Scott, PhD, RN, IBCLC, RLC, has enjoyed working as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) across many roles: inpatient lactation consultant, investigator for several human lactation research projects, published author, international speaker and co-chairperson for Kaiser Lactation Associates (KALA). Cheryl’s leadership with KALA has been instrumental in leading all 20 Kaiser Medical Centers to be the first to implement the State of California’s Model Hospital Policies. She also assists with the design and implementation of Kaiser Northern California’s breastfeeding policies, protocols and patient teaching resources for thousands of breastfeeding mothers. Cheryl’s efforts have resulted in her local hospital being rewarded with the highest breastfeeding initiation rates in Sacramento, along with improved patient satisfaction with hospital and lactation services.

PAT BIELECKI, MSN, RNC-OB, APN/CNS

Pat Bielecki has a combined 34 years of clinical and instructional experience in perinatal and neonatal nursing. She is a designated instructor for both AWHONN's Intermediate and Advanced Fetal Monitoring courses and has developed an online computer-based learning course that is an annual requirement for all physicians and nurses who are responsible for fetal monitoring. She is also a lead instructor for the S.T.A.B.L.E. program, is certified in Inpatient Obstetric Nursing since 1986, and has facilitated a 2-day certification review course for both Inpatient Obstetrics and Maternal/Newborn examinations. She received her BSN and MSN from Northern Illinois University and is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, Association of Women's Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nursing, Academy of Neonatal Nursing, and the National Association of Neonatal Nurses. Her past positions include staff nurse, manager, director, and clinical nurse specialist in both Level II and Level III facilities.

A lively and interesting speaker, she has presented for the March of Dimes and others about various perinatal topics, including diabetes in pregnancy, perinatal obesity, perinatal codes, and other high-risk obstetrics topics at various conferences. Pat has a wealth of knowledge and expertise that she shares with the audience through case studies and past experiences. She currently is the clinical nurse specialist for a large health care system in the Midwest and facilitates system-wide staff development in both low- and high-risk topics, including a 7-day orientation program for nurses unfamiliar with perinatal and neonatal nursing.
